A gap analysis of Internet-of-Things platforms

2016

We are experiencing an abundance of Internet-of-Things (IoT) middleware solutions that provide connectivity for sensors and actuators to the Internet. To gain a widespread adoption, these middleware solutions, referred to as platforms, have to meet the expectations of different players in the IoT ecosystem, including device providers, application developers, and end-users, among others. In this article, we evaluate a representative sample of these platforms, both proprietary and open-source, on the basis of their ability to meet the expectations of different IoT users. The evaluation is thus more focused on how ready and usable these platforms are for IoT ecosystem players, rather than on t…

Value creation in mobile tourism services : evaluating the value creation concerns of the Norwegian MOVE project

2007

Sammendrag på norsk og engelsk. The report presents the results of the evaluation activity specified as part of the MOVE project, a three year innovation project funded by the Research Council of Norway and seven industry and university partners. The aim of this project has been to establish a location-based electronic marketplace, offering mobile tourism services. Several pilot services including a map-based interface providing tourist guide functionality to the mobile handset, a web based tool for service providers’ registration of points of interest (POI), and two “infotainment” services (picture puzzle and riddle) has been developed. Peer to Consumer Lending

2022

Peer to consumer lending represents an alternative form of financing characterized, within the crowdfunding genus, by the collecting of credit offers to be matched with borrowing demand through a digital platform. The essay focuses on legal analysis of some aspects of the structure and the functioning of lending marketplaces operating in the sector at stake. The Author argues how this business model – especially when the phenomenon involves consumers and, more generally, non-professionals counterparts – may be critical as regards to the classical cathegories and concepts ruling the lending/borrowing discourse.

Online Black-Markets: An Investigation of a Digital Infrastructure in the Dark

2021

AbstractThis paper investigates the functioning of Online Black-Markets (OBMs), i.e. a digital infrastructure operating in the Dark Net that enables the exchange of illegal goods such as drugs, weapons and fake digital identities. OBMs exist notwithstanding adverse conditions such as police interventions, scams and market breakdowns. Relying on a longitudinal case study, we focus on the dynamics of interactions among actors and marketplace technologies and we identify three mechanisms explaining OBMs operations. In particular, we show that OBMs infrastructure is the result of commoditization, platformization and resilience processes. Our contribution relies on the identification of communit…

The marketplace of ideas and its externalities: Who pays the cost of online fake news?

2023

Since the nineteenth century, thanks to J.S. Mill, an argument against limiting the freedom of expression has been gaining ground, namely that the truth of an argument is the result of free competition between different ideas in a “marketplace of ideas” and that this competition can yield an approximate form of the truth or a robust argument. In this paper I will argue that Mill’s model of the marketplace of ideas is an “idealised” model because it assumes that there is a subject who seeks to know in a detached manner, without being influenced by his or her expectations, needs, ideologies, or biases. However, the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas is still relevant because it also harbour…
